104. Abner TEAGUE

ABNER4 TEAGUE (JOSHUA3, WILLIAM2, EDWARD1) was born 12 November 1763 in Rowan County, North Carolina, and died 07 January 1842 in Laurens County, South Carolina. He married AMELIA GARY 1783. She was born Abt. 1769, and died Abt. 1826 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
Notes for ABNER TEAGUE:
[Laurens County Kinfolk Vol 1 Book 2.FTW]
It appears that Abner was the only son to keep his share of the Teague Estate, as
he remained in South Carolina. His will was drawn in Nov. 30, 1837:
1-pay all debts and funeral expenses
2-$1500 to care for my 3 slaves: Neeris, Mary, and Mesa
3-Sell the Estate: divide among Thomas, Elijah, and Jesse, as well as the widow and children of deceased son Joshua (BUT excluding EMILY, wife of John Godfrey.)
THOMAS: $285.22
ELIJAH: $280.15
JESSE: $----------
JOSHUA'S survivors: $4111.81

He was originally buried in the Teague Cemetery on his land. The graves were moved to the Chandler Cemetery, Old Milton Road, Laurens County, S.C.
BURIED CROSS HILL CEMETERY ON CHANDLER.
Comment 2: FARM(1967) ON HIGHWAY 46 SEVERAL MILES OUT.
Comment 3: OF CLINTON, SOUTH CAROLINA LAURENS COUNTY..

It appears that all but Elijah, Thomas, and Jesse either died young or left Laurens County. Joshua died in 1834, leaving several children. Thomas became a doctor.
Elijah apparently farmed most of the Teague estate, and was prosperous, He had 13 children. Jesse married three times. Some of his descendants became well-known physicians. Isaac also became a doctor, and reportedly moved to Florida. He is not mentioned in the will, and there is no further record, except that he married a girl from Greenwood County, (then Abbeville). All the others died as children, or without marrying. See also William Harris, (Waterloo Harrises)
Notes for AMELIA GARY:
[Laurens County Kinfolk Vol 1 Book 2.FTW]
Amelia Gary Teague died at age 57. She was known as "Millie".
Chandler Cemetery. On the old Chandler Farm, Milton Road, owned (1996) by David Ramage.

Query I found posted online: Descendants of John Knight Shelton at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~smokymtnman/shelton/pafg13.htm
Ursula married (1) William Ricker on 20 Mar 1823 in Greene Co, TN. William was born in 1798 in Carmen Township, Shelton Laurel, Buncombe Co, NC.
From:To:"Joe Payne" Subject:Re: Shelton Laurel, Madison Co., NC Rickers Date:Mon, 17 Jul 2000 15:27:38 -0400
Hi Joe, Thanks for writing to me Joe...the parent's of this William Ricker that married Ursula Shelton isn't known... I feel sure that he is related to my *Peter Ricker...maybe a grandson, but which son isn't known... Peter and Peggy had a son named William Ricker that I used to think was this William that married Ursula Shelton...but, Peter and Peggy's son was killed in New Orleans during the War of 1812. Here is what Rich Nallenweg wrote about this William Ricker...and also our cousin, Raylene Cheatham. I copied something from the Tennessee Archives in Nashville that concerned William Ricker. His property was evidently inherited by his brothers and sisters. They were selling 160 acres of land in the Arkansas Territory to John Dickson the 18th of September, 1826. The deed of conveyance was from Jacob Ricker, George Ricker, Frederick Ricker, Martin Ricker, John Ricker, Joshua Willet and Rachel (his wife), Philip Smithers and Ephs (his wife),Solomon Fann and Polly (his wife), Michael Crum and Hulda (his wife). Philip Evert and Peggy (his wife), heirs at law of William Ricker Decd. This property was in the northwest 1/4 of section 35 of township seven north in range 13 west and founded on warrant 25.886. At least this information gives a record of who the Ricker sisters were married to. Its too bad the wives of the Ricker brothers were not mentioned.

I the said John Love have granted, bargained and sold, and do so by these presents, grant, bargain, sell, alien, enforce and confirm to him the said John Kesterson a certain piece or parcel of land situated in the county of Greene aforesaid and bounded as follows. Beginning at a red oak on Gordon's line and running thence south with his line 236 poles to a stake on H.Dunigan's line. Thence S45 east 104 poles to a white oak, Bowling's corner. Thence a direct corner to the beginning. Containing thirty acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the said piece or parcel of land to him the said John Kesterson and to his heirs forever and I the said John Love do by these present forever warrant and defend the said piece or parcel of land every part thereof to him the said John Kesterson and his heirs forever against the claims, right and title of all persons whatsoever who now do or hereafter may lawfully claim any rights, title or interest of or to the same of any part thereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first herein written, sealed, delivered in presence of: A. Kennedy, John Love, Jacob Smith
This indenture further witnesseth that I John Dickson of the same county and state doth by these presents, release and relinquish to the within named John Kesterson all my right and title to the within mentioned tract of land, and all the claim I have or may be support to have to the same. witness my hand & seal the day and year first therein written. Greene Co., TN history: "Samuel Henderson sold to John Dickson two tracts 100acres and 45acres on the south side of the Nolichucky River in the year 1836. This land joins John Wilson's old place, Henderson's line, a tree marked JH, Phillip Nesses line, Wilson now George mason's line, (the same land Samuel Henderson sold to Archibald Buster on 25 April 1830). Buster sold to John Dickson on 2 August 1830. Under signature of Samuel Henderson. General Index to Real Estate Conveyances Greene County TN Book 19 p. 236."

Goodspeed's History of Greene Co --1887
"The first schools in Greeneville, as now remembered, were taught in a log house standing near where Rhea Academy is, and in the Presbyterian Church. The latter was a boy's school, and was taught for four or five years by Joseph Brown. The former was doubtless the original Rhea Academy, and was opened about 1812. The lot was donated by John Rhea in 1811, and it is said that he also furnished a large part of the funds for the erection of the building. The present academy was built about 1825, and about 1840 the building for the female department was erected upon the lot given by John Dickson.

About 1843 an Episcopal Church was organized and a house of worship erected. Among the first members were Gen. T. D. Arnold and wife, Mordecai Lincoln and wife, Mrs. John Dickson, Mrs. Matilda Martin, Mrs. Catherine Williams, Miss Mary Lincoln and Loyd Tillman. The first minister was Dr. McCabe, his successors were Dr. Goode, A. M. Royce and W. W. Cahagan. The congregation was never a large one and, owing to deaths and removals, it has been still further decreased, and for several years no regular services have been held."

112. James CLARK

All these CLARK males seem to be of the same family. We are still trying to confirm the connections. Obviously some girls were born in between these guys.

A male participant from our line has participated in the CLARK DNA study and has found that our Clarks came from the Isle of Jura, part of Scotland.

Sevier Co., TN 1820 Census does not exist.

TERRITORY SOUTH OF FRENCH BROAD-LAND GRANTS:
CLARK-James State of TN LAND GRANTS in SEVIER COUNTY, TN Grant # 508
"#508 JAMES CLARK-239 acres 115 poles-Sevier County-on the waters of Little East Fork of Little Pigeon River-CC None Surveyed March 17, 1807" (CC stands for: Chain Carrier)

These five counties, Jefferson, Knox, Blount, Sevier and Cocke contained the Territory South of French Broad. In 1796 Tennessee became the sixteenth state, but she was still not free to issue land titles for land included in her Territory South of French Broad. North Carolina and the Federal Government were still squabbling over Tennessee’s lands and their disposition. In all this period of confusion, John Sevier saw that the rights of preemption and occupancy were preserved until 1806 when Tennessee was able to grant title to this area.

Had land adjacent to: John CRAIG in 1807.(Also near: John CHASTIN and George OLDHAM)

The Richardson's Cove area is where Philip Roberts and Rachel Lindsey had grants on Bird's Creek. Along the "waters of the Middle Prong" were the homesteads of Robert Shields, Jr. and William Shields, George Oldham, James Clark, Josiah Maples, William Mitchell, Joel Ivy, Samuel and James Ferguson, Alexander Bohanon, and Isaac Veach. The Red Bank Baptist Church, originally an arm of the Church in the Forks, was constituted in 1840. In the CLARK Cemetery in this area are 40-50 graves marked with fieldstones. No names can be read on the stones. It is located near the Little Pigeon River, about one-half mile west of Red Bank Baptist Church.

1830 lists a Silva (probably Zilpha) CLARK with males age 50-59, 1 male age 15-19, females 70-79, and 1 30-39.

Other CLARKS on the 1830 Sevier Co., TN Census are:
Isom CLARK age 30-39
James CLARK age 20-29
Amos CLARK age 30-39

On the 1840 Sevier Co., TN there is:
Jeremiah CLARK
Amos CLARK
James CLARK

Zilphy is listed on the 1840 Sevier Co., TN Census with 1 female age 80-89, female 20-29, one male age 10-14.

He is thought to be buried in the CLARK family cemetery. The CLARK Cemetery contains about 40-50 graves marked with fieldstones. No names can be read on the stones. It is located near the Little Pigeon River, about one-half mile west of Red Bank Baptist Church. To reach this cemetery, beginning in Sevierville at the intersection of US 441 and State Route 66, drive on US 411 (toward Newport) for 3.3 miles. Turn right onto Old US 411. Drive 0.6 miles and bear right onto Pittman Center Road. Drive 2.0 miles. The cemetery is on the right, about 400 yards at the top of the hill in a grove of trees. 2232 Pittman Center Rd.

A different James CLARK:
8 Sep 1818 (Warren) TN. Bazel RODEN to Jeremiah COMBS, both of Warren Co., for $100.00 10 ac.,on W. side of

formerly lived. Wit: Isaac DRAKE, George LEDBETTER. bk. B, pp. 447-448.

5 Dec 1818 (Warren) TN. Bazell RODEN to Jacob DRAKE both of Warren Co., for $100 50 ac. adj. 30 ac. survey of
William RODEN and 100 ac. survey of James CLARK. Wit. Martin JOHNSON, Joshua DEAN. Bk.B, pp 421-422.

The above James CLARK came from Pulaski Co KY, went to Madison Co AR after leaving Warren Co TN. He was married to Agnes Henderson.

113. Zilphy

Based on the names of the children of Isom CLARK's daughter, the evidence indicates that this was very likely their mother. The fact that Joseph named a daughter Zepha also indicates this.

Cocke County, Tennessee, Big Pigeon Church Minutes 1787 - 1874, Pages 30 - 39:
5th January 1805: Met according to a Jornment and after prayer proseaded to buisness -ZILPHIA CLARK applied for a letter of Dismission the same being granted unto hir ELEZEBETH MORRIS the same ajornd till meeting in corse - A. McKay

Probably the Silva on the 1830 Sevier Co., TN Census:
2 males 15-20
1 male 50-60
1 female 30-40
1 female 70-80

(John, Joseph, Isom, and Amos already on their own!)
Who is the male 50-60?- (Born 1770-1780) Perhaps a Son and Daughter-In-Law
(2 males 15-20 could have been born: 1805-1815)-Probably grandchildren or Jeremiah (He was born

She is thought to be buried in the CLARK family cemetery. The cemetery is on the right, about 400 yards at the top of the hill in a grove of trees.According to records of Jeremiah CLARK in the 1870 and 1880 Census records of Whitfield Co., GA, his mother was born in Ireland.

Some records state that her last name was SCOTT, but it appears that there was a Zelphia SCOTT who did marry a James CLARK. That James was in the 1850 St. Joseph Co., IN Census, 80 years old living with his son Malachi, therefore not our James CLARK.

114. EVANS

The father of Elizabeth is probably William who had a Mill on the river very close to the old CLARK homeplace on Clark branch about 4 miles south of Sevierville. He had a son named Richard.

Possibly the father of our Elizabeth is William EVANS from Wales.

From Vince Ballard [vincebtoo@yahoo.com] The Land grant for him in Green County, Tenn entered in 1779. Green County was then part of North Carolina, and the record is in the archives here in Raleigh.
===
The Grant is made out to Joseph T. James. I do not find the name 'Thompson' on the grant, just the initial 'T'.
===
The grant was taken out by another on 6 Oct 1779, and was assigned to Joseph T. James on 30 May 1794. The grant was surveyed for Joseph T. James on 29 June 1794. The chain bearers were John 'Peery' and Benjamin Willcox, adjoining property owners. The grant was issued to Joseph T. James on 18 Jan 1795. The grant is for 200 acres on Long Creek, the waters of Nolichucky River.
===
The grant was originally taken out in Sullivan County by John Sawyer in behalf of John and Thomas Moffatt orphans of William Moffatt. The original surveyors instruction (from Sullivan County) on the grant has the notation '...entered by John Sawyer in behalf of John and Thomas Moffatt orphans of William Moffat decd ...' It is difficult to read the signature of the person who assigned the grant to Joseph T. James. It looks like John 'Waddell' but surely should be John 'Moffatt'

Vince Ballard
I need help tracking Thompson Joseph James after he left Western North Carolina about 1800. He may have travelled with Rollins James, whose Revolutionary War Pension application shows that he moved very often and lived in several locations in the Ohio, Illinois area. There are at least 5 different land records in Buncombe and Burke Counties, NC that name both Thompson Joseph James and John Ballard. John Ballard was probably his son in law, and this is what I hope to prove beyond all doubt. John Ballard is on the 1800 Buncombe Census, then lived for awhile in Sevier Co., Tenn, then in Roane Co., Tenn from 1826 to 1839, then in Cooper Co, Missouri by 1840 Census. A Joseph James married Elizabeth Ballard about 1798 in Bedford Co, Virginia. but a search there did not find any Thompson Joseph James records (unless I just missed them)

Chronology
1815 Moved to Kentucky.
1816 KY -First child, Riley James, born.
Note: Thomas James went from NC all the way to Central KY, probably late 1815.
1819 TN - Rachel born in Cleveland, TN, at the GA line. By this time,Thomas had turned his wagon around and was headed South!
1820 Census? Thomas was in Indian Country, where future County of Bradley, TN would be located.
1820 Alfred born in AL
1823 William Charles born in Murray Co, GA (Probably Cherokee County).
1823 Ananias born in Morgan Co, AL
1824 Thos Jr born in Morgan Co, AL
1826 Morgan Co, AL, Thomas Sr James died.
===
Coweta County is near the Alabama line and that is where Thomas Sr. was in 1824 when Thomas Jr. was born. We are not sure which state Jr was born in. (Neither was he, as shown by his census enumerations)
===
This is what Thomas James' living children stated in 1880:
Riley James - Parents born NC / VA
Ananias James - Parents born TN/TN
Rachel James Romines Parents born TN / TN
===
We know Amellia Ballard James was born in VA.
We can probably rule out VA as birthplace of Thomas, as Riley, the oldest son, was probably correct.
===
Ann Lefevre [lefevrea@prodigy.net]
The information I have on Thomas was provided by Mary Sunshine Zimmer. An uncle of hers had access to a very old James journal. The journal gave Thomas' father's name as James James born in VA. Mother not listed. I have not found Thomas on any official records.
===
The following was posted by Mary Sunshine Zimmer, 2 Mar 2002, on the GenForum Ballard Family Genealogy Forum:
===
My great uncle Norman James, left a journal that listed a Nancy James who married a Richard Ballard and that she died in Darke County Ohio. Her father, according to Uncle Norman, was James James and she had sibling named William James, James James, John James and Thomas James.
Thomas is my gggGrandfather and he married a Ballard named Amelia "Milly" Ballard. They lived in Sevier County, TN and Sulphur Springs, Morgan County, Alabama. Thomas died there in 1826 and Millie returned to Sevier County. Millie died in Sevier County in 1863. She also lived in Grainger County (I believe that is right) with a daughter. Oh yes, most of their children were born in Clay County, Kentucky.

118. John THURMAN

DAR Ancestor # A207622

According to his Pension application he remained in Albemarle for 18-20 years after the Rev War or removed c 1798.

Source: Campbell Chronicles by Early, Page 517. He was a Revolutionary War War soldier #W28009.

Source: Pension record W. 28009. While residing in Albermarle Co., VA, John Thurman volunteered sometime between the years 1776 and 1779, served at various times amounting to three years in all, as a Private in the VA troops under Captains John Miller, John Key, S/Christopher Clark, Epperson, Brown and Benjamin Harris and Colonel Lindsey. He was in several engagements, one of which was near Charlottesville, VA, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, after which he was discharged in October 1781.

In reading the printouts of the multiple pages of the Revolutionary War pension application and widow's pension application paperwork a Lucy Tunis states that she is the 2nd child of John and Nancy Thurman and that she was born 31 May 1783 and her older sister Sarah was to have been born in 1781. This document of course, also lists my ancestor, Martha James (wife of Randall James) as a daughter of John and Nancy Sandridge Thurman. She is listed as the 8th child.

On one page, a John Thurman, Jr. and a J. W. Dunn were Blount Co., TN residents giving testimony regarding the date of John, Sr.'s death.

One William Thurman in 1845, aged 84 years, living in Hawkins Co., TN state that he served in the Rev. War with soldier, John Thurman from 1 Apr 1781, but did not state a relationship to him. He also gave details of him being drafted. He also stated that he was at the affair of their marriage and that is was performed by an Episcopal minister,Parson Murray.

No other children are mentioned in these documents. I have read through every page that I have, and these are the only children mentioned in this paperwork. -Sherry

It was believed that Jesse Stafford, son in law of Barnabas, may have been responsible for the erection of the John, Nancy, Barnabas, Sarah monument in Stafford Cemetery in Sevier Co., TN- but he died in 1899. An inscription on the monument below ground level says: ".....the exact location of the grave is unknown at the present year 1932"
This rules out Jesse but I did note a stone for Jesse's son James Monroe Stafford, married to Nancy Inman. She died in 1923 so it might have been one of their children. -Darrell Thurman in 2012
