Notes

64. Edward "Ned" SORRELL , Jr.

Edward, Sr's. son, Thomas stated that "his brother Edward (Jr.) removed to the Shallow Ford of the Yadkin in Rowan poor."

Located about 15 miles west of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Shallow Ford is, as its name implies, a shallow section of the Yadkin River which afforded a safe place for travelers to cross. In 1780 it was in Surry County, NC. Today, its east entrance is in Forsyth County, its west entrance in Yadkin County.

Surry Co., NC was formed from Rowan County in 1771. The 1817 tax list covers Surry Co., and also part of present day Yadkin Co., which was formed from Surry in 1850.

In Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War, dated 14 Sept 1800 and arranged by Counties, abstracted by Ransom McBride, and appearing in the NC Genealogical Society Journal, Volume XI, No 4, pg 251, Edward SORRELL, Sr. is mentioned as owing 38 pounds sterling. The report of William Duffy, Agent, states that "he called on Thomas SORRELL, eldest son of Edward SORRELL, deceased, and learned from him that his father died about the year 1790; that he made no will; and that no administration was had upon the Estate, the children agreeing to divide the property among themselves amicably and thinking their father very little in debt; that no receipts were found among the few papers of his father, nor remembers that he ever heard his father mention this debt; His father at all times was able to pay it, but no application was made by suit or otherwise; Mrs. SORRELL, wife of Thomas, says she remembers to have heard the old man say the HAMILTONs were indebted to him for a hogshead of tobacco.

The children of Edward SORRELL, deceased, are Thomas and William, now living on Crab Tree in Wake and in very good circumstances. Edward (Jr.) removed to the Shallow Ford of the Yadkin in Rowan poor. Betsey intermarried with Francis Barby, since removed to King and Queen County, VA, and Susannah intermarried with Captain Dempsey Blake of Wake, a rich man."

There are Edward, Thomas, and William SORRELL in Wake Co., NC in 1778 Court and Deed records. There are numerous SORRELL in Wake Co., NC.

Rebecca Blackwell's research suggests that his nickname may have been "Ned".

Because Bedford Co., TN's early records were burned, it has been a challenge to tie this family together with Thomas SORREL with a paper trail. Millia's letter is key! (We have proved a relationship through DNA.) Court Houses were built in 1810, 1821, 1830, 1873, and 1935. The Court House was destroyed in 1830 by a tornado. In March of 1863 Confederate soldiers made a fire to keep warm, but it spread to engulf the old courthouse and destroyed most of the records. Again, in 1934 the courthouse was destroyed by fire.

Bedford County has Tax Lists on Microfilm for: 1812, 1814, 1836-1839, 1875-1900

There is an Edward SORRELL listed in Bedford Co., TN in the 1820 Census:, page 66, 020001-01101.
2 males11-16 (Both were born in NC)
1 male 45-up
1 female 11-16
1 female 17-26
1 female 45-up
2 persons engaged in commerce.

This Census area is 1/4 mile N of the intersection of Center Church Rd. to 231 still in Bedford Co., TN. About 3-4 miles S of Shelbyville on the (Jordan C. Holt and William Dickson and Mary Freeman who were all on E side of the road-as they were listed beside Edward's household). Tim and Helen Marsh have looked for church records from the old Center Church congregation, but none have been located.

The family group is the same as the group above minus Rhoda. Next door to this Edward is a William DAVIS 2001-1. The children would be correct for he and Rhoda, but Rhoda is not listed here, so don't know. She may have died in childbirth. (Rhoda married in Surry Co., NC in 1816).

Edward is the first household enumerated on page 66, the next listing is William DAVIS, three more households, followed by Needham SORRELLS.

It is very interesting to me that Millia could write a beautiful letter, but her brother, Thomas, couldn't even sign his name!

65. Penina

She was supposedly a Cherokee Indian who lived to be 104 years old. (From the notes of Georgia Ann Nichols who was her great-granddaughter.)

There is a Penina SORRELS age 82, b NC, in the Bedford Co., TN 1850 Census, living in the household of George and Anna DAVIS.

The name Melinda was used by 3 of the children in naming their girls, so her (the mother of Edward's children) name could have been Melinda!

Millie has a daughter named Pernina Jane/Jane Pernina Davis.

She may have gone to MO with Anna and George as I can no longer find this Penina in TN after 1850. (Sherry S. Finchum)

66. James H. RUSSELL

(As I find Thomas SOWELL in Maury Co., TN it is hand-written consistently as SOWELL, and if he signs his name, it appears to be SOWELL, but hard to be for sure. Because my Thomas SORREL only signed with his mark, I am very doubtful this is my Thomas SORREL.)-Sherry S. Finchum

RUSSELL, Harvey RUSSELL, Thomas SORRELL, Martin VANCE, John Long, and many others.

Obion County court record gives John Long (the husband of Margaret Malinda Russell Long) guardianship for the minor children of James Russell and states that he is their brother-in-law!!!!! The children listed are Nancy O. Russell, Sebre Russell and Neety Russell.

Mar 1840 term, pg 205 Thomas Russell & Thomas Sorrells, Adms of estate of James Russell returned an account of sales of said estate. They are to lay off a dowerage of one years provisions for the support of Russell widow. (No name given!)

Also another possible relative--dates just make it hard to pinpoint--is a Malinda RUSSELL to Pinckney BELL marriage 18 Aug 1866 in Obion Co., TN. Elizabeth named her first female child Malinda, making this a very probably relative, but due to dates, probably a niece rather than a sister.

Very likely a Rosey RUSSELL who married a Francis Gideon 30 Dec 1839 in Obion Co., TN is related.(I now believe that this is his widow!)

There is also a Sarah A. married to a James W. Brown on 26 Jul 1850 in Obion Co., TN.

67. Rosey

Her first name is denoted with an "R" on the gravemarker of her daughter, Margaret Malinda. Her name could have been Rosanna.

Because James Russell died early and while some of his children were still infants and his wife R[---?---] Russell was still a young women, one would expect her to promptly remarry. I believe that the Rosey Russell who married Francis Gideon in Obion County 30 December 1839 is this woman. She is the right age in the 1840 Census and there are several small children living with them in the 1840 Census(Neety, Nancy, and Sabra). Alsey and J. Martin did not marry until 1841 and 1843 respectively.

She was probably about 18 years old when she married. Her age in 1840 would have been about 42-44 years old.

1840 Obion Co., TN Census

Dist. 3 is west of Dist. 2, going to the lake on the west and Dist. 5 is below Dist. 3. District 4 is west of Reelfoot Lake. Dist. 8 is on the lower east side of the county bordered by Dist. 6 & 7 on the north and east and Gibson Co on the South. Kenton would be in this district.

68. Andrew SCOTT

In the court documents of his father, John SCOTT, he died without a will and his children said they would forgo a piece of his estate in deference to their mother, who had to care for a retarded daughter. Andrew signed with wife Caty. (Washington Co., VA)

There is a note in the Lincoln Co., TN Census book that in July 1852 Wm DYER appointed guardian of children of Wilson Scott. Children named as in #4074 LCT Court. These are possibly the grandchildren of this man.

From notes of Mary Scott, he is listed as Andrew or Wilson SCOTT died in 1819 or 1820 in Lincoln Co., TN.

Information on this man and his ancestors came from Rev. LaVerne "Pike" Thomas 522 E. Flournoy Lucas Rd., Shreveport, LA 71115 (318) 798-1887 (1997) e-mail:pthomas@shreve.net (2005)

69. Catherine "Katy"

She is listed on the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN Census as a widow with 8 sons and 2 daughters.

She is listed as a charter member in 1826 of the Mt. Olivet Primitive Baptist Church.

She is living beside her son Samuel in 1830 & 1850 Census.

She is listed in his household in 1840.

Could her maiden name possibly be BUCHANAN?

I have also seen her maiden name listed as HARTSELL.

Lincoln Co., TN Will Book 3, pg 215: written on 14 day of Jan 1862. Proved on 2 May 1870. Names A. D. McAddams; Mary King and her heirs; Joseph H. McAddams; Susan King; my wife- Elizabeth, my daughter-Mary King; my daughter-Susanna King; My 3 sons: A. D., J. H., and J. I. McADDAMS as Executors.

75. Elizabeth Henrietta DAVIDSON

Her name is listed on the Census as Henrietta, and also on her tombstone. Elizabeth Henrietta is from the records submitted by Mrs. Thomas A. McADAMS. They appear to be from Bible records. Family has remembered that her name was Rita (probably short for Henrietta).

There is an error on the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census record which records the wife's name of John McAdams as Margaret age 61 born in NC. The recorder has transcribed the wives of father and son with John McADAMS, Jr. age 23, who is living next door with his wife Henrietta age 18 born in TN.

78. Thomas BRENTS Sr.

Williamson Co., TN Marriage Records Book 1800-1850 Text: Solomon Brent posted bond with him the amount of $250.00 Date: 5 Jan 1808 Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002

His son, Thomas W. lists his father's birthplace as KY in the 1880 Census.

Goodspeed Biographies for Marshall Co., TN lists an article that verifies this husband and wife from the "Blue-Grass State". The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmarshl/goodspeed/gdspdbiosB.html (1999)

He was in Maury Co., TN in Jun 1809 as a Road Commissioner.

"He resided in KY until 1800, then went to Lincoln Co. (later became Marshall), TN. He was a man of remarkable intellectual powers, superior to many of his associates in that particular. He and wife were not professed Christians, but they inclined to the Methodist Episcopal faith. He was an old-line Democrat and died at the age of sixty-two." (Goodspeed)

He is listed in the War of 1812 and was with Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. (Goodspeed History of Central, AR. pg 245)

Information in TN Vol IV Marshall Co., TN Bible Records, Cemetery Records, Will, Land Grants, and Court Records from Genealogical Records, TN Society NSDAR 1978-1979 lists the children of Thomas BRENTS.

There is room in this family line for another family group considering the dates of births of children do not begin until 1810-1815.

Lincoln Co., TN Deed Book B, Page 60: Deed from Randal McGavock to Thomas Brents: Indenture made this 13th day of November 1819, between Randal McGavock of Davidon county, and Thomas Brents of Lincoln county, for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred and sixty dollars to him in hand paid by Brents, for a tract of land lying on the waters of Cane Creek, and containing two hundred and ten acres, it being the balance of a 280 acre tract located by Pillow and others, after taking out 70 acres this day conveyed to the locators, beginning at two sugar trees 40 poles east of the northwest corner of the 280 acre tract, it being the northeast corener of the 70 acre tract conveyed to Pillow, the locator, and running east with the north boundary of the 280 acre tract to the northeast corner, then south witht he eastern boundary to the southeast corner of the same, then west with the southern boundary to an elm, the southeast corner of the 70 acre tract, then north with the line of the 70 acre tract to the beginning.

Thomas was appointed Road Overseer in Lincoln Co., TN in 1815.

Lincoln Co., TN 1820 Census lists: 459 11 Bents, Thomas 120001/21010

Marshall Co., TN was formed out of Lincoln Co., TN in 1836.

A Thomas Brents head of household appears in 1840 Marshall County census, 000110001-01000001. I suppose the 60-70 year old male could be someone else, but.... Also I do not have a copy, but there was a Thomas Brents will recorded, 1842, as-a-72 (MS).

80. John Franklin REDD , Sr.

This is not his proved father-but there are too many given names to be a coincendence with this documented family! (John Franklin, George, Lucy, Lucy Ann, Mary, and particularly: Dabney)

(I cannot find an historical document containing an "F." or "Franklin"-but see the child of Lucy REDD SHINAULT!)

They moved to Bedford Co., TN from VA in the 1830's (Actually about 1846). They lived northwest of Bedford Community, south of the Duck River. 1850 Bedford Co., TN Census. Death date is from Bible records from Victoria Woodard SMITH.

This is what Sandra Vickers Brown wrote back in 1998 "My dad's mother was Cora Jane Cheeves. Her mother was Victoria Woodard Smith. I came across a Bible belonging to Victoria in the possession of my second cousin who's mother was Cora's sister. He lives in Huntsville, AL. I found in this Bible names and dates that I felt might help us locate more info about Victoria, her mother Rachel who married a Robert Smith or other family. Inside was this: John Redd died 7-30-1855 age 62 years old. Suzannah Redd died 7-3-1873. With this info along with the 1850 Bedford Co., TN census I found that John then was born in 1784 and that Suzannah was born in 1803. Now what I would like to find out is the connection with my great grandmother and the Redd's. Also you may know something else. There is also a Susan E. Melson died 5-7-1887 in the Bible. Could this be John and Susannah's daughter? Other info in this Bible: S. V. Smith borned 8-2-1866, Mita Jane Smith born 10-20-1881, Nannie Lee Arnold born 7-13-1888 and John Smith died 10-26-1946 age 62 years old. There is an inscription also: WHEN THIS YOU SEE REMEMBER ME signed Sallie Melson. If you could help us with any of this we would be so grateful. I do know the John Smith was a stepbrother to Cora Cheeves. He married Tennie ???? They were to have lived on "POORGRAB" Rd near Petersburg, TN. May have been buried there. -Sandra Vickers Brown. Her e-mail was cherokee@naxs.net (1998).

Redd shall have all stock, household and kitchen furniture that is this day in my possession, all of which I bequeath to her so long as she may live. Second, I further ordain that after the death of my wife Susan C. Redd, all of my lands and tenements belonging to the estate, be sold and equally divided among my sons and daughters and their heirs. 85. Tabitha GALLAGHER

Her last name could have been Lambert. Martha Caroline Wagster Reese's informant has her mother's maiden name as Lambert on her death certificate.

In the 1830 Bedford Co., TN Census, there is a William Gallagher. Possibly a relative.

86. John C. GILBERT Sr.

John L. Gilbert came from GA, an old Census says. Just across the Savannah River from where the Fosters lived in Abbeyville District. John L. Gilbert lived in Franklin Co., GA Seems he was brother of Doster (or Dock) Gilbert. I was told that they lived at the Fullerton, place, or above, from their location in the census.

Land deed recorded 7 Feb 1868 in Lincoln Co., TN lists siblings of John C. Gilbert as: John Morton and wife Artemesia (Gilbert), W. C. Wagster and wife Mary Ann (Gilbert), and William Morton and wife Sarah (Gilbert).

88. Aaron FREEMAN

John Freeman of Norfolk County, Virginia: His descendants in North Carolina and Virginia and other colonial North Carolina Freeman families by Merrill Hill Mosher (Paperback - 1994)

There is a birth record in the John Freeman book that references Samuel Freeman's children found in Revolutionary War Pension file of Jeremiah Early R3191. p 0068. There is actually a photocopy of that record in the above named book. His birthdate comes from a Revolutionary War Pension file of Jeremiah Early. Aaron's father was in Shocco Creek, Granville, Co., NC in 1752.

Here are the other notes related to Aaron as a son of Samuel (page 93-95 in the book):

Aaron Freeman is the ancestor of most of the present day Freeman families of Surry County. He was the only one of the sons of Samuel Freeman who remained in North Carolina. He was born 11 September 1751 probably in Bertie County, and moved with his family the next year to Shocco Creek in Granville County. (Granville Co. Tax lists show Samuel Freeman as a resident in 1752.)

He married, probably about 1776, to Nancy. Her surname is traditionally given as Hawkins. Tradition of the Surry County descendants of this couple give the place of marriage as Hillsborough. (Letter, 22 February 1922 Robert Alexander Hawkins to Anna Kirk Faulkner, original in possession of Merrill Hill Mosher and copy in my possession.)

Surry Co., NC Will abstracts, Vols 1-3, 1771-1827 abstracted and compiled by Jo White Linn:
The Will of William Cunningham executed March 10, 1826 in Surry County, North Carolina wherein he requests that "all my just debts shall be punctually paid and that my Boddy shall be decently buried but in a a plain maner." He then gives:

"Unto the heirs of my Beloved son John, Deceased: $100.00. Unto my Beloved Son Samuel: $100.00; Unto my Beloved Son William; daughter Susannah, Unto the heirs of my Beloved Daughter Sarah Ree; Unto my Beloved Daughter Dorcas, two dollars for reason she has received her portion in property in consequence of a bill of sale I gave her before she married...as I never received any thing in consideration thereof; Unto my Beloved Daughter Rebecca; Unto my Beloved Daughter Ann; Unto Margaret Bartley, an orphan girl I have raised, one bed and furniture and one cow...I hereby appoint my son William, Stephen Early, and William Hays, and Joel Underwood my hole and sole Executors.

Surry Co., NC Will Abstracts, Book 4, pg 5: "4:20. Will of William Cuningham Beloved wife Polly all my estate both real and personal to raise and educate children and maintain her father and mother (not named) if she can to give his children as they leave her as much as I have given daughter, Dorcas. After wife's death remaining property to be divided amoong all children equally. (children not named.). Low of health, wishes to be buried beside his little son. Wife to sell sufficient property to pay debts. Beloved wife, Polly Cuningha, and brother-in-law, Alexander Freeman, etc.

On April 6, 1829 William executed a subsequent will, "revoking all others" requests that he be "interred...by the side of my little son." Since John died only after marrying and leaving issue, and Samuel was alive and listed on his will of 1826, and William was named as executor on this and his previous Will, there must have been another son whose name we do not know and who probably died at an early age. In this Will of 1829 he requests "that my beloved wife...have and enjoy all my estate...and if she has it in her power to give my children as they leave her much property as has been advanced by me to my daughter Dorcas." He appoints "my beloved wife Polly Cunningham and my brother-in-law Alexander Freeman, Executrix and Executor of this my last will and testament. " This Will was probated in May term 1829 of Surry County, N.C. court. So he died between April 6, 1829 and May term of court 1829.

Stephen J. Early and William Hayes, two of the executors named in the Will dated 1826 were sons-in-law of William Cunningham. Stephen Early married Rebecca Cunningham and William Hayes married Ann Cunningham.

Aaron left no will.

ROBERT A. FREEMAN, Attorney-At-Law Dobson, NC Feb 22 1922 to Mrs. W. S. Faulkner, Alameda, Calf.
Dear Madam: The will of William Freeman is recorded in Book of Wills No 3 page 48 records of Surry County, probated May session 1802. In this will he names his wife Sarah and daughters Polly and Penelope Haines. This daughter Polly was the one certainly who married Jeremiah King 1804. I surmise that the Penelope Haines was the wife of the Haines who was the iron manufacturer to whom the order for iron signed by “R Grant” was sent.

The will of Samuel Freeman is recorded in the Book No 3 page 19, records of Surry Co., NC, probated May session 1796, Made March 8 1796, naming his wife Elizabeth, daughters Rachel Early, Nancy Huett, Nanny Badgett, and sons Joshua, James, and Aaron (my great grandfather).

I have found no other records of importance to aid you, though I keep my “eyes skinned” when was I for occasion to run out over early records, which is frequent.

I will give you a brief sketch of my father’s notes as far as they can affect you:

“Samuel Freeman, and his brother William and another brother, Edward, I think came from England. Wm settled in what is now Stokes Co., NC then a part of Surry Co. and was an iron manufacturer. I do not know where Edward settled. Samuel settled at
Siloam, NC. He married Elizabeth Alexander of Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC. He owned a great deal of land on the Yadkin granted by the Earle of Granville, was a member of the committee of safety of Surry Co., represented the county in the legislature
and constitutional convention. He had six children: Elizabeth [Rachel] who married Jeremiah Early of Va, Nannie who married James Badgett and moved to Tennessee, Nancy who married a Huett of Mecklenburg Co., NC and moved back there (?), James who went South, perhaps, and became a cotton manufacturer [deed shows he first went to Tenn], Joshua went to KY. And became very wealthy, Aaron who married a Hawkins of Hillsboro, Orange County, the first state capital. It is probable that Aaron went with his
father to Hillsboro and met her there and that she came up to Surry to camp meetings as Samuel Freeman was a leading Methodist in the section and took great part in supporting the camp meetings.

Aaron Freeman and Nancy Hawkins, my grandparents, had the following children: John who went to Tenn; Abner who also went to Tenn; Richard who went to St. Louis, Mo.; James; Elizabeth; Rachel who married John Ryan and went to Adair, Ky. And had three children. Dr.Thos Jefferson, James and Nicholas Hawkins, Polly; Nicholas and Alexander my father. Alexander Freeman, my father, married Sally Mosley, and had the following children: West, Hawkins, Henry who moved to MO., Abner, Edward, Nicholas and
Alexander [my father], Rebecca, Nancy, Mary and Sally.”

I do not know what value these notes can be to you but as you say you might get a clue from them. I wish I could be of real value to you in your search.

I am sure Reuben Grant made no will. There is no administration that I can locate, and early probate records are without index, but I have spent some time in turning thru to see if I could happen on something for you. Be assured that if I would run across anything I shall be delighted to send it to you.
With best wishes for you, I always remain Faithfully yours Robt. Alexander Freeman

89. Nancy Anna HAWKINS

There is a letter, dated 22 Feb 1922 Robert Alexander Hawkins to Anna Kirk Fulkner that states that Aaron and Nancy were married in Hillsborough."John Freeman of Norfolk Co., VA" by Merrill Hill Mosher, Heritage Books, Inc.

In the 1830 Surry Co., NC Census and in the 1840 Surry Co., NC Census, there is a female age 70-80 living with Alexander and his family. That would be birthdate between 1760-1770. I thought that this might be Nancy, until I found the admr of Aron & Nancy Freeman on 17 Feb 1831. Doesn't mean that Nancy is deceased, but certainly may mean that she was on that date.

90. Thomas Henderson GLIDEWELL Sr.

He supposedly served in the Indian Wars that occurred while he was yet a young man living in VA, from which state he came to TN in the early part of the 19th Century (Source: Obituary of his son-William Jackson.)

He was soldier in the War of 1812, being in the battles of Norfolk and Richmond, VA ( Information provided by Mrs. K. Norton Gill, Rt. 2, Box 967, Hayti, MO 63851 from Mrs. Leister E. Presley, 1708 West Center Ave. Searcy, AR 72143, who copied it from " Goodspeed's Biographies- 1890-Saline County, AR)

He was an overseer in NC for some 4 years, moving from there in 1823, settling in Lincoln Co., TN where he bought wild land and soon made himself a home and farm, keeping a country inn.

(Some more research should be done on the time period prior to coming to Lincoln Co., TN-there are no records to record the death of his first wife, and marriage to his 2nd wife in Lincoln Co.,TN).

He was a Tavern Keeper in 1826/27 in Lincoln Co., TN, (TN Vol II, p 204)
"Thomas Glidewell is permitted to keep a tavern in this county at his own house for twelve months, who entered into bond and security, 2nd Jan 1826".
Remaining there until 1857, he then moved to Cape Girardeau, MO, near Jackson.

While in TN, he was Captain in the State Militia, and was know as Colonel Glidewell. After coming to MO he engaged in farming for 2 years, dying in 1861.

From Bible of William Berry Freeman: Thomas H. Glidewell left the Ridge November 3rd day 1858.

"Thomas H. Glidewell, one of the oldest farmers of Saline Township, was born in North Carolina, in the year 1819, and is the son of Thomas H. and Susan (Allen) Glidewell, natives, respectively, of Virginia and North Carolina, and of Scotch and Welsh origin. Thomas H. Glidewell, Sr., was an overseer in North Carolina for some four years, moving from there in 1823, and settling in Lincoln County, Tenn., where he bought wild land and soon made himself a home and farm, keeping a country inn. Remaining there until 1857, he then moved to Cape Girardeau, Mo., near Jackson. While in Tennessee Mr. Glidewell was captain in the State militia, and was known as Col. Glidewell. After coming to Missouri he engaged in farming for two years, dying in 1861. He was married about 1816 the first time, becoming by this marriage the father of thirteen children, five of whom survive: Thomas H. (our subject), John and Mary (twins, the latter the wife of Mr. Steelman), Drucilla (widow of Abner Freeman), and William J. (who lives in Florida). The mother died about 1834. She was an honored member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Glidewell was married the second time to Agnes Billings, who bore him these children: Atlanta (wife of Isaac Ridicks, who lives in Cape Girardeau County, MO.), Terry (who lives in Illinois), Babe (in Illinois), and Rufus (in Illinois). Mrs. Glidewell died in 1884. She and her husband were both members of the Baptist Church. John Glidewell served in the War of Independence as a private, and Thomas H. My great-great grandfather Lt. Littleberry Leftwich was captured at Fort Donelson in February 1862 and was taken to Johnson's Island in Lake Erie, a prison for officers. He was exchanged at Vicksburg in September 1862 and was discharged soon afterwards. The Johnson's Island Preservation Society has a website at <http://www.johnsonsisland.org/> that gives information about the prison and also about the society's historical and archaeological work that is going on there now. Membership dues are $25 a year. Here's an excerpt from the society website: "During the 40 months of its existence, approximately 10,000 men were processed into the stockade on Johnsonâs Island. Most were Confederate officers. Twenty-six were either generals or officers who became generals during or after their imprisonment. Others confined there were a small number of privates, bushwhackers, guerrillas, and citizens suspected of disloyalty to the Union. The maximum number of prisoners at any one time was about 3224 in January, 1864." -Carolyn Crowley

93. Sarah "Sally" REES

It appears based on all the evidence collected, that the children of Sally REES are the children of Littleberry Leftwich. He left the children of Sally REES land in his will. Based on the REESE DNA project, a documented male descendant of this REESE line matches at 26 and 37 markers with documented descendants of the LEFTWICH line from early VA. Robert REES had supposed parents: Berry and Sally REES. Berry=Littleberry. There is no Mr. Rees every referenced in Bedford Co., VA. Our Sally first appears as a HOH in the 1820 Census-shortly before the death of Littleberry Leftwich.

1788 Slowman REES to Sally G. REESE Bill of Sale of personal property. Deed Book #8, pg 83.

1820 Bedford Co., VA lists Sally REESE

REECE, William twp - Bethel, Bedford Co., VA

1830 Sally's household lists:
1 female between 60-70 years (Sally)
1 between 20 - 30 years (probably Parthenia)
1 between 20 - 30 years (Likely Fleming Sanders) (Or perhaps James Campbell and 2 youngest children of Meaky's)
1 white male under 5 years,
1 white female under 5 years,
No slaves or free colored persons listed.

1830 Lincoln Co., TN Census lists REESE:

1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census lists Parthenia REESE as head of household age 85 with Sarah listed as male age 14. Both listed as being born in VA. I believe that the names have been transcribed, and it should be Sarah age 85 and Parthenia as younger. With the listing of Sarah as male, obviously there can be mistakes! Other children listed in the household are: Callowhill age 7 b TN and Martin V. age 40 b in TN.

1850 United States Federal Census
Name: Sarah Rees
Age: 14 (She and Parthenia have been switched)
Birth Year: abt 1836
Birthplace: Virginia
Home in 1850: Subdivision 2, Lincoln, Tennessee
Family Number: 603
Parthenia Rees 85
Sarah Rees 14
Callowhill Rees 7
Martin V Rees 40

The cemetery record lists her age as 89 which would agree with the age of 85 in the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census.

Later in the 1860 Lincoln Co., TN Census Parthenia is listed as age 56, with no Sarah, and Calahill age 24 and Vanbuness age 16. Still living beside Wilkerson W. REESE.

The children of Sally REESE receive land from Littleberry LEFTWICH in his will that includes her heirs dated 30 May 1823 and rec 23 Jun 1823 (Will Book 5, pg 419 Bedford Co., VA) I have thoroughly researched the LEFTWICH line, and find no connection to our Sally. Perhaps she was a sister to one of Littleberry LEFTWICH's wives probably Frances HOPKINS considering the dates, or her husband Berry was a relative of Littleberry LEFTWICH.

Deed Book 22, pg 368 14 May 1831 lists Sally and all the children's names as they are selling the land that they were given in the will of Littleberry LEFTWICH. I have yet to prove any connection of Sally to Littleberry or his family. It lists the men's (her sons) names and the first names of the men's wives. Wilkerson, Parthenia and Flemin are listed alone. Parthenia is listed as head of household in the 1850 Census of Lincoln Co., TN with some children, perhaps nieces and nephews. It does list that the children were born in TN.

Some additional research must be done on the daughters (Ann, Martha, and Nancy) who did not appear to move to Lincoln County, TN as the sons did. Perhaps they stayed in Bedford Co., VA and there may be a link to their father is some document there.

The land for the old cemetery at Mt. Hermon (where Sally is buried) was sold by Abner FREEMAN of Lincoln Co., TN. According to early deeds, this appears to be a part of the old Higginbotham tract purchased by William Higginbotham in 1810 and 1811. On October 15, 1830, one acre of land was deeded to Isaac Bennett, Peterson Grammar, and Henry Dean and their successors in office as trustees of the Meeting House at Mt. Hermon. Included in this transaction was the meeting house and all improvements thereon. Witnesses were William C. FREEMAN and James FREEMAN.

The information below is listed to assist in determining the ancestry of our REES/E family. It has yet to be determined the actual given name of the man who married and fathered the children of our Sally. We find no record of a Berry REESE anywhere in VA in early records. He very likely could have been killed in the War of 1812. One of the sons of Virginia REES COLLIER, daughter of Robert W. REES, was named Berry.

From the Tithe Lists, it appears that Lunenburg Co., is what became Bedford in 1753.

Sally is HOH in the 1820 Bedford Co., VA Census.

I did suspect this man's actual first name to be William (son and three grandsons) and his father's name to be Robert or Slowman because these names are used in the names of sons or grandsons, but if the William in Bedford Co., VA who died in 1810 is a brother, then probably not his name also. The names Jordan and Perry are also grandsons names.

I did find a William REESE who was recorded in the Order Books of Bedford Co., VA. He was sworn for jury duty.

In Book 17, 1815-1820 there is a William REESE, pg 745......
February Court 1820
William Reese being first sworn- came into court and made oath that he entered under Capt. Elias Edmonds (---) & Porterfield regiment in the Virginia line for the term of three years & served four years & four months & received an honorable discharge from Major Mazzaro which discharge was destroyed by water-before he reached home-and that his indigent circumstances requires the assistance of his country for support. Jacob White sworn, says that the said William Reese is in very indigent circumstances & needs the assistance of his country for support. The Bedford County, VA History Book lists a William REESE on the Militia roll during the Revolution. (Perhaps the William who married Milly SWAIN.)

The 1810 Census has a William REESE, pg 478 with himself as Male age 26-45, 2 females under 10 and 1 female age 26-45(assumed his wife) [This is probably the William REESE who married Milly Swain in Bedford Co., VA: William REESE and Milly SWAIN, 31 Aug 1801, surety, Chas. Swain]. He is too young to have done the Revolution! Too old for our William Gibbs. The William REESE from Franklin Co., VA who died in 1810 (father of William Washington, John, etc.) was already dead, and his wife Mary is listed on page 480 of the 1810 Census.

There are 3 Williams in Dinwiddie Co., VA in the tax records 1782.
Wm REES 1 free male, 0 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 0 horses, and 2 cattle.
William REES 1 free male, 2 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 6 horses, 20 cattle.
William REES 1 free male, 0 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 1 horse, 0 cattle.

There are 2 Williams in Dinwiddie Co., VA in the tax records of 1787, listed as Jr. and Sr. [This Jr. & Sr. does not denote relation, only 1 the older!]

The Bedford Co. Order Books list a William in 2 separate jury lists in May 1786. There are 2 William REESE on the list of taxpayers for Bedford Co., VA in 1809. (William who married Milly, and the William who died in 1810?)

The William REESE from Franklin Co., VA (father of William Washington REESE, did not buy land in Bedford Co., VA until 1806, with the 1818 tax list listing his estate).

The names Roger, William, and Richard appear first in Dinwiddie and were probably brothers or father/sons. The names Hugh, Isham, and Jordan appear early and are there at least through 1800.

Lunenburg County in 1748, 1749, 1750 and 1751 embraced an area now in 11 counties which are: Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, Campbell, Bedford, and Appomattox.

1782 Dinwiddie Co., VA formed from Prince George County in 1752 lists: Jordan, Josiah, Francis, William, William, James, Amey, Isham, Edward, Wm., and Frederick REES.

In the records of 1787 VA there are numerous names in the Tax Records with the spellings: REECE, REES, and REESE.

1787 Dinwiddie Co., VA lists: Frederick; Edward; William, Jr; Jordan; Isham; Amey; Jesse; William, Sr; Capt. Hugh; Francis; Henry; and Herod REESE.

Early VA Rees Taxpayers (1782-1787) are:

Reese/Reece/Rees, they had to be age 16 to be listed:

Jordan Reese 1802-1813
David Reese 1803-1804 and then 1815 on
Slowman Reese 1802 & 1803
John Reese 1801on
William Reese, Sr. 1804-1818, part of this must be his estate, mentioned in the 1818 tax list. (Sr. denotes that he was the oldest, not necessarily related!) (Probably William who died in 1810.)
2nd William Reese 1809 on (Probably William who married Milly SWAIN)
Robert W Reese 1811 on
Stephen Reese 1817 on
Edmund Reese 1819
Joseph Reese 1820

1810 Census of VA

Dinwiddie County lists REESE: Frances, Fredrick, Henry, Herbert Sr. and Jr., Jordan, Nancy

In Southampton County, VA there is a Sally REECE listed. (This is the wife of Randolph REESE!)

*In 1810 Dinwiddie Co., VA Census there is a William FEATHERSTONE #146. Featherstone is a surname in this area early on.

1820 Census of VA(Listed in alphabetical order)

David REESE, Jr. and Pamela RAY, 4 Nov 1805, surety, Thomas RAY. Consent of Luke RAY, Sr., father of Pamela.

One document recorded in a Lincoln County Pioneer, Vol 15 (Jan 1986), pg 28 states that the parents of James Robert Reese were Berry and Sarah REESE. The biographical sketch of John M. Stone begins on pg. 27 and gives this information within the article. John M. Stone is the son of Mildred REESE (daughter of Robert W. REESE and Nancy MINOR) and James A. Stone (son of Moses STONE and Margaret WILLIAMS. [Understanding that Mildred was alive when this article was written, and the fact that she was an adult before her grandmother Sarah "Sally" died in 1854, I believe that she should have known the name of Sally's husband who died just prior to Mildred's birth!-Sherry S. Finchum.] One of the sons of Virginia REES COLLIER, daughter of Robert W. REES was named Berry.

Howard County, AR Heritage 1988 from the Howard County Heritage Club pg. 380 (William Gibbs and Katherine REESE) "The REESE family originally came from Wales. Two REESE brothers emigrated from Wales to Virginia via Ireland. Later two brothers, descendants of the original family, immigrated to TN about 1830. It is unknown whether they went to Bedford Co., TN at the same time, but it is known that William Gibbs (1792-185?) came to AR about 20 years before John R. arrived.

Perhaps the 2 original brothers were Slowman and Matthias REES!

94. Thomas SMITH

I have joined these 2 as siblings as a strong possibility to locate parents. This parentage is not confirmed at all!

1840 Lincoln Co., TN Census:
Thomas Smith (see 1850 Census below):

1 male 60 and under 70
1 female 15 and under 20

Speculating on Isham and his family. Aka: Isam?, Isom? Francis Marion's Men: Isom Hodges N 463.

Isham Hodge on 1779 Jury List for Cheraws District SC. There is an auditor's account for pay issued jointly to Isham and Joseph Hodges. Isham Hodges collected pay due John Hodges, because in the pension application of John Hodges of Abbeville, he describes how when he went to obtain his back pay, he found that a man named Isham Hodges had produced a power of attorney from John Hodges and collected all the pay. Abbeville John protested that he did not even know any Isham Hodges, much less authorize him to collect his pay.

John Hodges of Abbeville, SC Pension W10117 stated, he never received money owed him by the state and was informed that ISHAM HODGES drew it, showing a paper authorizing him to do so, but this John of Abbeville says he never gave any such permission. (Isham was intending to draw pay of our John Hodges of Long Bluff, SC, this proves a mixup of the John Hodges of SC Rev War records).

"Edmund Hodges was a child of Isham Hodges, who may be a son of the elder John Hodge(s), Sr., and a brother to your John Hodges and my Sarah Hodge(s). Mary, Isham's wife, and Edmund were administrators of Isham's estate in 1798. "

Edmund Hodges, father-Isham Hodges of Marlboro County SC, lived in Sevier Co. TN after 1812)...."

This deed of gift is interesting. It shows that a John in our line was married to Sarah and that they had a child Mary who married a Harry. This could be our John who m. Ann Standard.

Because the above deeds may cause some confusion at the time people lived near and on both sides of the Pedee River - those on the east side in Marlborough County and on the west side in Darlington County.

--"Paulser INGLE and George INGLE were in NC found on Gun Powder Creek, Burke Co., NC 1778. Paulser b circa 1737, who was a Rev War Soldier, enlisting from NC, Gun Powder Creek, Lower Creek Area, Burke County, NC on 23 Jun 1780 and George b circa 1735 who has a better recorded record. His descendant is CEO, and President of Ingle Markets of Black Mt., NC, both men, claim Germany as country of origin. There were known 4 different Ingle men in the Rev War.

--My gg grandfather,Paulser Ingle, found on Gun Powder Creek, Burke Co, NC Fall 1778. He "inlisted" (sic) in First Division, NC Continental Forces (Militia) on 23 Jun 1780, under Col. Clark. George Ingle, be 1735, Germany, m. Ann Margaret Clapp, 1753, Naturalized 1763, Guilford Co, NC, d 1799, same place. He was, also, in the Rev War. John, an officer, in the Rev War, The North Carolina Line, received 3840 Acres of land north of Nashville, in 1787. William Ingle is documented in the Applications for Pensions in TN, by Lonzo Ingle, his grandson. All of these Ingle men came from Germany and had large families.

--George & Paulser replicated some children's names, lived relatively closely in the wilderness of NC. I have much info on Paulser and George. John Ingle, the Commissioned Officer, in the NC Line, is little known to me. If I recall, he was taken prisoner but either paroled or escaped, and returned to duty. I had a call from CA last evening about him but received nothing more than info on his land grant, mentioned above. George Ingle had a large family, but your John could not have been his child, but, possibly a grandchild. Nor could he have been the son of Paulser, unless a "yard 'youngun" as Paulser Ingle's wife died after 1805 (the last known record of her in Land Lottery, Franklin Co, GA).

--Since we know that Paulser Ingle and George Ingle were here at such an early date, and your John Ingle was b. 1812, and Paulser's family were living in the Mulberry Creek area of Lincoln, Moore, Bedford Counties around Fayetteville, TN, it is unlikely that your John belonged to Paulser.Paulser's John m. Nancy Smith in SC, and moved on into Bedford County with the Smith family in c. 1814.

--I believe that you have the possibility of descending from George Ingle & Ann Margaret Clapp, as they had a large family, and lived East of the locations of your John." (fhlawson@hiwaay.net)

--John Ingle (1788–1874) immigrated from Somersham, England, to America in 1818. He settled near Saundersville (now Inglefield) in Vanderburgh County where he farmed and served as the town's postmaster from 1823–69.
Sources: A Guide to Manuscripts of the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana State Library, Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society. p. 100. General and Reference Collection Z1281 .P85 1986.
The collection consists primarily of correspondence of Ingle and his wife, Martha, with their family in England, 1813–69. The letters discuss a variety of subjects including the differences between life in America and England, the development of Southern Indiana, conditions in England, the family business, and economic, religious, and political matters. Also included is John Ingle's description of his trip from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Indiana, and his visit to Morris Birbeck's Illinois settlement in 1818. There also are letters from the Ingles' son, John, Jr., to his English relatives, 1834–37. (www.indianahistory.org <http://www.indianahistory.org/>)

--The migration of European settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania into Union County as early as 1751 was encouraged by the availability of free frontier land.

--This migration was accelerated by the Treaty of 1755 between South Carolina Governor James Glen and Old Hopp (the principal Cherokee chief), which ceded the land to the South Carolina province. The Cherokees made raids on Union and other frontier settlements until they were defeated in the Cherokee War, which ended in 1761.

--During the early years, Union County's economy revolved around subsistence agriculture. However, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793 -- and by 1800, cotton had begun to penetrate Union County, ultimately leading to increased demand for slaves. During the first decade of the 1800s, many Quakers and others left Union County because they objected to the rapid growth of plantation slavery.

--Meanwhile, by the 1820s and 1830s, soil exhaustion began causing a mass emigration of Union County's poorer White population to new lands further south and west -- from Georgia to Texas. Some of the emigrants took their slaves with them.

There are no INGLEs in the earlier Union Co., SC Census or in the later 1850 Census.
