Ancestors of Sherry Lynn SORRELLS

Notes

16. William Harvey SORRELLS Sr.

He is listed in the Hannah's Gap Church Records.

He died at age of 82 years.

The family states that He said, "I came from NC to TN @ age 8 years." ( He did not come from NC at this time, because they were in Obion Co., TN prior to coming to Middle TN.) Perhaps this is what he remembered.

He was wounded in the Battle of Murfreesboro 31 Dec 1862. He served as a Private in Company C 8th Infantry (Confederacy). Enlisted 15 Sep 1862 in Lincoln Co., TN. Served in Captain William D. Bond's Company.

17. Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" SCOTT

Birth Information from the 1850 Census, Lincoln Co., TN lists 1844 as birth year. Information from Mary SCOTT lists the 1848 year of birth and in the family birth order this seems reasonable.

She made lye soap one day and died in her sleep that night.

Death Information from the Records of Hannah's Gap Baptist Church membership records Lincoln Co., TN also listed as death in Apr 1898 in another entry In Hannah's Gap records.

From Charles Lee Redd:leeandterry@hotmail.com (2006) Regarding the photo/painting of the Pleasant Henderson Freeman Homeplace, I also have one of the originals. There must have been more than one made because you have one and so do I. It must be like the one you have. My copy is also convex and oval shaped.

Regarding Pleasant Henderson Freeman Homeplace, I have nothing about its history. As I stated I was raised there. My Dad, Massey Redd owned the farm and it was always referred to as the "Freeman Place". We lived there until my Dad bought the store on the Ridge. We then moved to the house behind the store. My bother Tim still owns the store building and the house (Orfee Freeman house) and I guess he plans to retire there. My brother Ted still resides at the site of the Pleasant Henderson Freeman Homeplace house. It burnt many years ago.

After we moved to the Ridge my Dad had a tenant farmer in the house and we always thought he burnt it. After my Dad died my Mom held onto the property but eventually sold it, but retained the old house location. When she died my brother Ted inherited the Dan Hastings farm (Next farm-also owned by my Dad) and the house site. I lived the first 13 years of my life on that farm and in that house and I have to this day many, many, many fond memories and a few not so fond memories. Going to the outhouse on freezing days was is one of those not too memories.

By today's standards the house was huge, both in terms of square footage and ceilings height. The property was really a compound. It contained the house, a smoke house, a small chicken hatchery, two large chicken houses and a garage. Across the road was another garage, the large barn and a spring house. Behind the house was a root cellar and beside the house was a well. Most everything is gone now. The well, the root cellar, the across the road garage, the barn and the spring house are still there but in poor shape and probably will not last too much longer.

No bathroom in the house - outside toilet. The house was two story in the front. There were two huge bedrooms on the second floor and an equally large bedroom on the first floor. The entrance door was large and ornate with glass on the top half. In the center of the door was a mechanical door bell that consisted of an ornate lever surrounded with carvings . Pull the lever down and the bell rang. We used to drive my Mom crazy with that bell.

Immediately inside this door to the right front was an entrance hallway and a stair case to the second floor bedrooms. Immediately to the right was the first floor bedroom. This bedroom had a mantle, a fireplace and a closet. I think this was the only closet in the entire house but the rooms were large enough to contain chiffoniers or chifforobes with space left over. At the end of the entrance hallway to the left was the living room. It also contained a mantel and fire place. Off the living room was a huge dinning room with sixteen foot high ceilings. Above the ceiling was a belfry that contained a large dinner bell and a pull chain that extended below the ceiling. That bell could be heard all over the valley and ringing it usually resulted in a neighbor telephone call inquiring if everything was okay.

The phones in those days were party lines and one call informed all. The kitchen was equally as large with a huge wood stove and a pantry. There was also a wrap a round back porch with a washroom. The house had piping for gas light illumination. By the time we moved there the house had been electrified and they were no longer in use but the fixtures were present. The gas required was produced by using manure. In the yard away from the house was a round vat like structure partially buried in the ground. Manure from the barn ect was placed in this vat and a air tight lid was placed over the vat. The decomposition of the manure produced methane gas the same as our modern day land fills produce methane. The gas was piped into the house and the result was gas lights.

There were large oak trees (mostly all gone now) in the large front yard with a stone oriental fence with wrought iron gates. In the rear of the house was a place for a vegetable garden and an apple, peach and pear orchard. When this house was build it was state of the art and beautiful. The photograph bears this out. It was not insulated however and as such was cold and difficult to heat. It unfortunately was built on square stone supports that were not cemented together and they had the tendency to come apart.

It was a great place to grow up. We had all the animals you would expect a farm to have, the old swimming hole, friends up and down the road, a real "Huckleberry Finn/Mark Twain" type of place. Granny and Gran Pa lived on the Ridge not far away and it was an excellent place to raise a family. We had something there that I'm afraid has been lost.

23. Nancy Catherine REESE

She was thought to have died of Tuberculosis.

I have a photo of her sitting in front of the Spring House on their homeplace. William Roy, her grandson is sitting in her lap.

Listed as Nannie J. in the 1880 Lincoln Co., TN Census.

24. HODGES

I have seen his name listed as William. I have linked this child to the Sevier Co., TN HODGES family as there is a DNA match to this line.

I have the 1860 Census of Sevier Co., TN District 7, Boyd's Creek Post Office:
William HODGES age 20 Farmer, b TN living with parents
Edward and Mary HODGES that is definitely the age and in the proximity to have fathered the children of Sarah.

Or: 471 District 9
Henry HODGE 42 Farmer 1600 1350
Mariah HODGE 46 Tennessee
Edmond 19 Farmer

HODGE/S is surname for John's father. His mother retained the name of Ingle. The family notes indicate that a HODGE/HODGES was the father of Sarah's children. A relationship to the HODGES has been confirmed (Jan 2006) through DNA research. Sarah's son John and his male descendants match with the Family Tree DNA HODGES project. You can view the project results at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/hodges/results.html John's descendant's DNA is listed as H-38.

This family in 1870 (Trundles Crossroads-District 14) is listed as HODGES with
Henry G. age 52
Mariah age 57
Edmond S. age 29
Sarah E. age 24 keeping house
Nancy age 2
Ellen age 1

There is a Francis HODGES age 65 b in SC living in the 1910 Sevier Co., TN Census. Nish INGLE POWELL is living there as a servant. He is listed as a widower with 8 children, 7 of whom are still living.

The Hodge family had a ferry and sand operation on the French Broad River near Boyd's Creek years ago.

What about this family group?

25. Sarah INGLE

Her birthdate is based on the 1850 and 1860 Census records.

Sarah was born between 1832-1840 and I find no record of a marriage in Sevier Co. According to family legend Sarah was never married, but had 3 children. She is listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 Sevier Co., TN with her parents.

In 1850 Cocke Co., TN Census she is listed as age 11, b SC

1860 Sevier Co., TN Census she is listed as age 20, b NC

The family is in Sevier Co in 1860, District 9-Boyd's Creek Area, Taken on 14 Jul 1860 #82-363:
John 61 b TN listed as a farmer
Caroline 43 b NC
Jane 21
Sarah 20 listed as a weaver
William 19
James 19
Caroline 15
Rufus 11
John 7
Wesley 2 (Jane's son)
Mary 4/12 (Sarah's daughter)

I have seen a William Hodges, son of Edmond W., Jr. and Mary C. HODGES listed as the father of her 2 younger children!

In 1880 Sevier Co., TN, b SC, she is listed as 43 and living with her parents,

John Ingle 85
Celia Ingle 68
Sarah Ingle 43 (Where are her children?)

1900 Census at age 67.

This is the mother of John Ingle. I have been unable to find conclusive dates. She is still living at age 67 according to the 1900 Sevier Co., TN Census and listed as unmarried. She is living with a niece, Hannah, and her husband Cornelius Hedrick. Hannah's father was William INGLE a brother to this Sarah. There are no other Sarah's in Sevier Co., TN at this time period, therefore I conclude that this is my Sarah, especially because she is still unmarried in 1900. The family history says that she lived to see her grandchildren. She gives her age as 67 and her birthdate as 1832, with no month recorded. Her brother is living next door and he gives his birthyear as 1835, age 65.

Sarah's nieces, daughters of William, Sallie and Celia, both married TEAGUE brothers as my John INGLE married their sister. These close connections add to the evidence that this is my Sarah.

Her death date is from the Bible of William INGLE, her brother.

It was recorded by a Belle INGLE Sufferidge that she never married the HODGES that fathered her three children: Kate, Joe, and Rube and that Kate married a JUSTUS. This is not accurate, as the Joe and Rube are children of Kate JUSTUS!

In the Sevier County Court Minutes [Pg569] On 02 Jul 1860 State of TN vs Henry McMott for Bastardy Bond regarding: Sarah INGLE, mother of a bastard child, named Mary, by Henry McMOTT (Wm. H. McMott) . He was ordered to pay support.

Henry McMOTT on 14 Oct 1861 was ordered to pay for the second years support of the child Mary. Sevier County Court Minutes [Pg727] This child is likely our Mary INGLE who married the Texan.

26. Wallace "Joshaway" TEAGUE

The 96th Dist. of SC. It did take in both of what is now Laurens and Newberry Counties.
Still looking for possible parents. I feel confident that he is a descendant of Joshua and Dorothy Gant TEAGUE, but just don't know exactly where he fits in. I know that he is related to the Laurens Co., SC TEAGUEs as he matches with the male DNA.

We have DNA evidence that Wallace is a descendant of Edward TEAGUE b 1660 of Bristol, England that traveled to Cecil Co., MD.

The TEAGUE family is supposedly of Celtic Origin and lived in England, Scotland, and Ireland for many centuries. Some of their descendants still live there. The Teague Coat of Arms was granted by the King of England probably 1200-1250 A.D.

The Teague family migrated from England to Fredrick Co., VA about 1720-1728.

They moved from Virginia to Orange Co., NC about 1740-1750. From there, they spread to other parts of NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TN, MO, TX, CA, and other parts of the United States.

There is one line that is suspect to connect to William b abt 1789>Walter TEAGUE b 1813 m Susannah>Henry Harrison TEAGUE b 1841, Lovena TEAGUE b 1846, John L. TEAGUE b 1850, Marsetta TEAGUE b 1853, James H. TEAGUE b 1858, Marion Charles TEAGUE b 1864. A descendant of this line is Ella Jo KELLER e-mail: ejkeller@mindspring.com

Spartanburg County, South Carolina (just north of Laurens Co.) 1850 Census: The household in question is that of a W. Thomas (Teague), hireling, age 29, and his wife, Nancy, age 30. It shows this couple had the following children:

1. Joshua, born about 1841, South Carolina.
2. Sarah, born about 1843, South Carolina.
3. William, born about 1845, South Carolina.
4. Mary, born about 1847, South Carolina.
5. Almay (male), born about 1849, South Carolina.

1850 United States Federal Census
Name: W Thomas
Age: 29
Birth Year: abt 1821
Home in 1850: Spartanburg, South Carolina
Gender: Male
Family Number: 2222
W Thomas 29
Nancy Thomas 30
Joshua Thomas 9
Sarah Thomas 7
William Thomas 5
Mary Thomas 3
Almay Thomas 1

This is incorrectly recorded and should be Wallace TEAGUE, Nancy's father was listed nearby and the census taker must have assumed the name of THOMAS rather than TEAGUE as they were living beside of Nancy's parents, the THOMAS'.

From the will of William THOMAS, Sr. in Spartanburg Co., SC: “I do will and bequeath unto the bodily heirs of Nancy Teague dead Three Hundred and seventy dollars to be paid to them severally as they become of age by W. Jasper Thomas & Elizabith Thomas and the balance of their part of the estate being thirty dollars I have bild back to make good a claim which I had against Wallis Teague for a wagon which I loaned him and he failed to return.” Spartanburg County, Carolina dated 28 December 1862, probated 31 March 1863.

After this, he is found in 1858 in Greene Co, TN with a marriage to Rebekah Cutshall, who was the wife of John Cutshall, Jr. before John evidently died in 1854.

Rebecca is living with her parents in the 9th division East District of Greene Co., TN in the 1850 Census. Taken on the 29th day of August.

I have added several TEAGUE children found living among different families in the 1860 Greene Co., TN who were all born in SC. Letha is listed as born in TN, but she is listed as only being 2, and would have born in TN. All of these children are listed in District 9, which is where Rebecca's parents were living in the 1850 Census. I believe that after Nancy died, her children were scattered amongst the neighbors there in Greene Co., TN.

[An examination of the 1860 Census of Greene County, Tennessee shows various stray Teague children were living in District 9: William Teague, born about 1845, South Carolina, living in the household of Eph Link;
Almarene Teague, born about 1850, South Carolina, living in the household of Humphy Wells;
Nancy A. Teague, born about 1848, South Carolina, living in the household of Ham M. Rector;
Letha C. Teague, born about 1858, Tennessee, living in the household of John and Sarah Nelson.
Jack Teague, which individual couldn’t be located in the 1860 Census. Later censuses of Greene County, Tennessee (1870, 1880, 1900) show a Jackson (or Jack) Teague, born about 1852, evidently in South Carolina.

As stated above, Letha C. Teague, born about 1858, Tennessee was living in the household of John and Sarah Nelson [see Document 40]. The marriage records of Greene County, Tennessee indicate that John Nelson and Sarah Teague were married in that county 21 March 1858 [see Document 67]. As such, it seems that Sarah Teague, wife of John Nelson, can be added to the list of stray Teague children who occur in the records of Greene County, Tennessee in the period, 1858-1870.

The 1860 Census indicates that Sarah, wife of John Nelson, was born about 1845, in South Carolina. In 1858 (the year of Wallace Teague’s marriage to Rebecca Dickson), William Teague, then aged 13, the eldest of the Teague stray children, was bound in Greene County, Tennessee to serve Ephraim Link until aged 21 years. Jacob Harris is listed as the security. In 1857, the previous year, the same Jacob Harris was appointed guardian for George (youngest son of John CUTSHALL, Sr.) and David, William, and Henry Cutshall, the 3 children of Wallace Teague’s future wife, Rebecca Dickson.

Born c1822, SC; died after Oct 1874, TN. Married 1st Nancy, who was born c1825, SC and 2nd on June 10, 1858, Greene Co., TN to Mrs. Rebecca (DICKSON) CUTSHALL, who was born c 1835, NC; died Oct. 11, 1884, buried Zion Hill Cemetery, Sevier Co., TN; widow of John CUTSHALL, Jr; daughter of David and Elizabeth STEEMAN DICKSON.

My family information is that he was called "Joshua" or "Joshaway" TEAGUE, but court records list his given name as Wallace "TEAGUE". (Sherry S. Finchum) He likely had a son who was killed in the Civil War by the name of Joshua. This Joshua Tessaway TEAGUE was married to a Sopia DICKSON, sister to Rebecca! He was also listed as born in SC.

The name is recorded in Belle INGLE SUFFRIDGE's records as: TIGUE.

The family is not clearly listed on the 1860 Census in TN, but is likely them, especially noting the CUTSHORT-CUTSHALL child named Henry:

*Newton Teague 17 living in Blount Co in 1870. I wonder if this is the same Newton who was 6 and enumerated with Wallace and Rebecca in 1860? Then I found a Samuel N. Teague married to Rebecca Delozier March 8, 1871 in Blount Co. I wonder if there is a connection there (perhaps Samuel Newton Teague)?

The following information from TEAGUE, TX family history at B-RI Railroad & Historical Museum.
"Wallace Teague
(c1822-1871) He was born Wallace Alexander: changed his and his children's surname to his step-father's name: TEAGUE. Wallace's father was abusive and brutal, while his step-father was more of a father than his natural father. It has been said : "Martha DEAN married Wallace Alexander and had children: William Marion, James Albert, and Jackson". Wallace changed his name to Wallace Teague." (This story is not accurate regarding Wallace's children from both his first and second wives as they are related by DNA to Edward TEAGUE of Cecil Co., MD- Sherry S. Finchum) (He could certainly have been raised by an ALEXANDER man.)

Also from these notes, they list children: George and Mary, but they are not found in the Greene Co., TN Census records. Mary likely married or died (There is a Mary THOMAS listed as a child of Nancy and William THOMAS in Spartanburg, SC), therefore very hard to trace, and there is no George found in SC or in TN census records.

From Cocke Co., TN Heritage Book: "Family oral history relates that there were 2 brothers named Jack and Bill ALEXANDER. The ALEXANDER man and wife died, when these boys were young. They had no other relatives and were taken in and raised by a family by the name of TEAGUE. (These would be Wallace's oldest boys.) Again, not true as DNA proves them to be TEAGUEs

From a Cocke Co., TN TEAGUE descendant: "Anyway this is the story Daddy told me. A set of parents died in a flu epidemic, leaving two boys. A Teague family took them in, and the boys assumed the name of Teague." DNA disproves!

From William H. Teague, son of James A. Alexander (or Teague). He said James had two brothers (no names). Their mother married a TEAGUE after ALEXANDER died and they moved from Spartanburg to Greeneville, Greene Co., Tennessee. The boys became known as "the Teague boys." James and his two brothers decided to keep and use the name of TEAGUE because the oldest brother said the Teague man had been better to them than their father. DNA disproves!

Teague Family Resource Center, a Teague site located in England. One researcher: Scotty Teague
scottea123@aol.com had a blurb about 2 brothers being taken in by a Teague family around 1890 in Catawba or Alexander Co., N.C. The mother was full Cherokee. Parents died in flu epidemic. There was no one to take care of the boys. Being half-breed, had a hard time. Took off walking. He has possession of the 100 year old family Bible.

TEAGUE Family Magazine: In Vol.III, p. 109, there was an Annie Alexander and a William Alexander on p. 120. In Vol. II, there was an Atwell Alexander, a Corine Alexander, two Marianna Alexanders, all on p. 131. There was a J. Will Alexander on p. 130-131.

30. Smith Ferguson "S. F." PAINE

There is a book that was written about an admired preacher in NC by the name of Smith Ferguson. Numerous children were named Smith Ferguson in his honor. I believe that this is the case with our S. F. Paine.
His daughter, Mary, helped him to write a wonderful Memoir about the family history. You can view it at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/ncbpayne.htm

"Little River Baptist Church: In 1841, Smith Furguson was pastor and there were 111 members. In 1847 there was the greatest revival ever recorded in this area; 158 people were baptized. In 1849 the pastor, Smith Ferguson ordained nine ministers". "Three Forks Baptist Church: Rev. Smith Ferguson served one year till 1861."

"Grandfather Smith Fergurson Paine was ordained to the Baptist ministry by Roaring Fork Baptist Church in NC, 9 Aug 1881, and later transferred his membership to Zion's Grove Baptist in Sevier County, TN 17 Dec 1904. He was pastor of several churches, and converted and baptized many people into the faith of his church.

Grandfather was a large man, over 6 feet in height, dark of completion and hair, a big-boned man weighing over 200 pounds. He was of Dutch Hollander and Swiss descent. There were four brothers-his great grandfather was one of them-who emigrated to America. They came to VA and scattered from there. His great-grandfather remaining. Grandfather loved his family and grandchildren. He liked to tease us and when we were small and to hold us on his lap."(Newton B. Clark)

I have several photographs of him. (Sherry S. Finchum)

I have a tin-type picture of this family. (SSF)

31. Mary Emeline "Molly" MCINTIRE

"Grandmother PAINE operated the switchboard on Bird's Creek (named that for the large number of pigeons around). They would call & say I want to talk to someone, and she would plug them in. Our ring was 2 longs and 1 short. Grandmother would never let me listen in. When a storm would come up she would go outside and pull something so that the lightening would not come in on the lines." (Emma Deane CLARK)

"Grandmother, Mary Emeline McIntire Paine, was of Irish ancestry. She was a small woman, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches in height, weighed around 100 pounds, was of fair complexion, which was even beautiful in her advanced years, blue eyed, and red hair. She was born in Buncombe County, NC and died in Sevier Co., TN. Grandmother was full of life and fun. She was an excellent singer, she usually sang soprano, but would sing alto equally as well. She had a beautiful voice. She liked to play games and tell tales, even tales of witchcraft, of which she knew many, some of them would make your hair stand up. She was inclined to be superstitious, and she knew several remedies there-for. She liked to have young people around her, and she loved and adored her grandchildren. Grandmother liked to visit, and when the urge struck her, she would simply harness whatever animal was available to the buggy and take off. It was a thrill to see her coming around the road towards home for a visit. The grandchildren were always welcome at Grandmother's and some of the happiest memories of my childhood are my visits to grandmother's. She always had cookies, jams or jellies available, and I never left Grandmother's empty handed. She always gave you something-an apple, pecans, a cuff link or collar button-but always something. She was of true nobility, she loved clothes, of which she had many, shoes, gloves, hats, and dresses. She loved silks and soft materials, and knew how to dress and wear them. Grandmother was what you would call a fancy dresser. She also had loads of jewelry. She loved colorful bedspreads, and could not resist an Irish peddler when he opened his pack.

Grandmother usually enjoyed good health, in the spring of 1920 she was visiting Mother, and while sitting by the fire kidding with Rev. George Houser, she suffered a stroke from which she never recovered. It took here speech. It was not the direct cause of her death, but was the contributing factor. In some manner she injured one of her arms and it got infected and blood poisoning set in." (Newton B. Clark)

I have other documents prepared by J B Waters Jr. that say that Mary's parents were Seb McIntyre and Mary Randles.

DEATH: Certificate State of TN #153 Sevier County, TN lists here father as Cebrm McIntire b in NC and mother as Mary Randles b NC. Cause of death listed as unknown; loss of mind for 18 months but no Doctor's report. Informant was A.M. Paine

Rev Paine described her as a “medium sized woman with red hair, blue eyes and fair skin” and he lovingly referred to her as “Molly”. She was a great lover of flowers, had a nice voice and helped with the singing while he preached. He stated he went to work as best he could to provide for his wife and parents in a ruined country. In 1886 they moved from North Carolina, to Birds Creek in Sevier County Tennessee, together they had 8 children.

I have a photograph of her carding wool. (Sherry S. Finchum)
